Our Statement
In the Maeda Lab, researchers with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and identities work together. We are committed to cultivating a supportive environment where everyone is welcomed unconditionally. We recognize the history of racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and white supremacy intrinsic to our society, including in academia. Science only works when an antiracist and inclusive environment exists. By respecting and bringing together each person's strengths and diverse ideas, we continuously foster a work environment that facilitates a robust approach to answer innovative questions and provide creative solutions for our society.
Our Goals
Welcome and support all individuals regardless of cultural background or identity.
Reduce implicit bias by periodically discussing racial and other diversity disparities in our lab and obtaining sensitivity training.
Continually learn about bias, diversity, and inclusion in order to improve the lab and facilitate a safe and supportive environment.
- Feb 2022: The Maeda lab discussed how to overcome implicit bias that we all have by reading a short article, watching videos, and taking an Implicit Association Test (IAT) together. Many thanks to Bailey Kleven and Tadhg Young for leading the discussion!
Make science accessible to scientists of all backgrounds. In order to promote diversity in science and academia, we will promote exposure/outreach to groups suffering from historical oppression.
Create a community of practice that celebrates and promotes diverse participation in STEM at the Madison area.
Promote an environment that fosters belonging and opportunities for learning at every career stage within the lab.
